I enjoy keeping things simple. The initial idea in how to move differently is incredibly simple and easy to feel, yet can lead you towards increasing complexity.
Many people have heard of the concept of 'eccentric loading', the muscles/soft tissue, are under load when lengthening. The same can be said of 'co-contraction', where there is simultaneous activation of muscles/soft tissue on opposite sides of a joint. Yet most people have not had a direct experience of these concepts, or a feeling of them within the body. They are incredibly important aspects of movement, the majority of people are not utilising these simple things which keep our body in alignment and the joints stable. Instead of creating joint stability, there is instability and twisting.
The first step is to give you the feeling of both eccentric loading and co-contraction, linking you into the benefits. Everything begins to grow from these two seeds. From that point onwards, an increasing variety of new things can be learned, targeting problem areas. When we feel the above concepts, whole new worlds begin to open.
Learn to engage with your body and self in the above way, which will help to keep your joints stable, yet open, creating more elasticity within your muscles and connective tissue. Actively go deeper into painful and tight areas, allow your body to regain a feeling of safety.
When you connect into moving with deeper eccentric loading and co-contraction, discover speeds which allow your nervous system to relax from hyper sensitive to normal. Initially tight and painful areas will need to be moved very slowly, as the nervous system calms and we engage more tissue, speeds begin to quicken.
Many instances of pain and tightness are created by our subconscious around the joints as a protective mechanism, by limiting our range of movement. As you learn to stabilise/realign your joints and relax your nervous system, pain and tightness begin to drift away. We no longer need to protect the joint structures. Our body begins to open up once again.
We can only deal with so much information at any one time. If a large section of our awareness is taken up by painful signals, we miss out on a lot of good feelings. As pain and tightness lessen, we create more space for the good feelings. We begin to interact with our internal, then external worlds in new, exciting and different ways.
Once you know how to engage with your body and can delve deeper on your own, we can accelerate your progress by targeting detailed areas and via assisted movement. We can begin to identify, then target difficult and stuck areas.
